Sometimes I Wonder About Marriage

Sometimes I wonder about marriage.

As someone who feels trapped without options, I wonder whether marriage would eventually feel like a cage for someone like me.

I find myself thinking that perhaps a marriage license should have an expiration date, like other licenses, with the option to renew. Renewal would happen only if both people agreed.

If children are involved, parental responsibilities would continue whether or not the marriage license is renewed. If the license is not renewed, assets will be divided accordingly. The agreement simply reaches its end unless both people consciously choose it again.

Would something like this keep people from remaining in relationships that are no longer nurturing, fulfilling, or healthy simply because leaving feels overwhelmingly complicated?

Marriage, mortgages, loans—so many things we need or desire come with structures that can feel incredibly confining. Sometimes I wonder whether there are other ways to accomplish the same goals without feeling permanently bound to them.

I’m not a linear thinker, so perhaps there is something I’m missing about what makes marriage a lifelong contract worth maintaining. My mind, my thoughts, and my emotions tend to move in atypical  patterns which is why I’m interested in conversation and exploration rather than arriving at a definitive answer.

What are your thoughts?

Would knowing that you had to consciously choose your marriage again every few years make the commitment feel ***less meaningful—or more meaningful***?

Let’s talk about it.

As always, sending you love, peace, and courage to make the best decisions for yourself.
